This workshop is designed for people who may or may not play an instrument, and who have little or no knowledge of the structure of music. It may also be appropriate for people who have a basic understanding of music but wish to fill in some gaps and feel more confident about their understanding.

Format: Small, interactive, group class with energetic and fun teacher.

Supplies: One workbook, music notebook, pencil.

Topics: Note Reading, Intervals, Scales, Keys, Circle of Fifths, Chords, Chords in a Key, Ear Training.

Intermediate Music Theory and Musicianship

This class is geared toward students who have a general background in the rudiments of Music Theory and Musicianship. Its goals are to deepen understanding of basic principles such as intervals, chords, scales and keys. It would focus largely on ear training, sight singing, keyboard skills and analysis of music in the pop, rock and jazz genres.

Prerequisites: This class is the continuation a 6-week Fundamentals of Music Theory Class. Students must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the following areas: Major Scale formula, Circle of Fifths, Intervals and Triad Construction. A placement exam will be given prior to enrollment. Don’t be scared. Just the basics, not analysis of a Bach Cantata.

Topics: Compound Intervals, Interval Inversions, 7th Chords, Chord Progressions, Chart Reading and Comparison of Chart Styles, Ear Training, Intro to Harmonization, Intro to Voice Leading. The class is interactive; a lot of drilling and hand-on work. 1-4 hours of homework per week.

IT’S ALL ABOUT RHYTHM !!!

Spend 1 hour per week learning and playing rhythms with a small group. We will learn how to READ rhythm notation and we will PLAY different percussion instruments in order to solidify the understanding of the rhythms. Reading and playing rhythms is one the most important aspects of musicianship. No matter what instrument you play, if any, this workshop is a must if you want to deepen your understanding of rhythm. Great for singers too.

Prerequisites: None. This is for beginning or intermediate readers of rhythm notation, although it will start at the very beginning.

Format: In each class, we will introduce a rhythmic concept, and we will spend most of the time playing examples of those concepts.

Topics: Time Signatures, Note Values, Rests, Rhythmic Counterpoint.

Materials: None

Schedule: (6) Thursdays 8/12, 8/19, 8/26, 9/2, 9/9, 9/16.
